Project Overview
This project involved a full driveway replacement and front garden landscaping for a semi-detached property in Rhiwbina, Cardiff. The homeowner's old concrete driveway had reached the end of its life, and the brief was to replace it with a durable, attractive resin bound surface, widen the entrance for easier vehicle access, and tidy up the surrounding garden with a neat block paving border.
The Challenge
The existing driveway was a tired, cracked concrete slab that had deteriorated significantly over the years — uneven, weed-strewn, and too narrow at the entrance for comfortable access with larger vehicles. The homeowner wanted a driveway that would not only solve these practical issues but also lift the kerb appeal of the whole property, while retaining and framing an attractive tree in the front garden.

The Process
Transforming a driveway is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about improving accessibility, increasing property value, and creating a lasting first impression. In this project, we took an ageing concrete driveway and completely re-engineered the space to accommodate additional parking, a widened entrance, and a modern resin bound finish. 1. Demolition and Excavation
Work began with the removal of the old concrete driveway. The area was excavated down to make way for a new, properly engineered sub-base — essential for a long-lasting resin bound finish.

2. Widening the Entrance
To improve access, the driveway entrance was widened and a new red brick pillar was built to match the property's existing brickwork, giving the entrance a smarter, more proportionate opening.

3. Sub-base and Edging
A compacted hardcore sub-base was laid across the excavated area, and a black block paving border was installed around the full perimeter of the driveway and curved neatly around the retained garden tree. This border not only frames the resin surface but also provides a strong, stable edge restraint.

4. Tarmac Binder Course
A tarmac substrate was laid and compacted over the sub-base, providing a smooth, solid base ready for the resin bound system to be trowelled directly on top. The surface was carefully levelled and allowed to set fully, ensuring maximum adhesion and a perfectly flat profile for the final resin aggregate layer.

5. Resin Bound Surfacing
The resin bound surface was applied in a “Springtime” aggregate blend, trowelled by hand to a smooth, seamless, permeable finish across the full driveway and pathway areas.
The Result
The finished driveway is a significant transformation from the cracked concrete that came before it. The gold-toned “Springtime” resin surface, bordered neatly in black block paving, gives the property a polished, cohesive look that complements the red brick of the house and new entrance pillar. The tree has been retained as a feature, with the resin sweeping around a neatly edged planting bed at its base. The wider entrance makes access considerably easier, and the permeable nature of the resin surface means excellent drainage with no standing water.
