Resin Bound Driveway, Steps & Side Pathway Bridgend, South Wales
Project Overview
This project involved a complete front-of-house transformation for a semi-detached property in Bridgend, South Wales. The brief was to replace the old surfacing with a new “Harvest Gold” resin bound driveway, rebuild a tired entrance pillar, resurface the front steps, and add a matching resin bound pathway down the side of the house to the front door. It is a good example of the quality resin bound driveway installation we carry out across Bridgend and the surrounding South Wales area.
The Challenge
The old driveway surface was worn and needed full removal. The entrance pillar was crumbling, with loose brickwork and a weathered cap. The concrete steps at the front of the house were tired and uneven, and the side path needed to link the driveway to the front door. The Bridgend homeowner wanted one cohesive look across all of these areas, with a finish that would complement the property’s pebble-dash walls and black window frames.

The Process
1. Excavation and Removal of Old Materials
The old debris, earth and concrete were dug out and removed from site by grab wagon. Boards were laid to protect the road surface during removal.

2. Structural Sub-base
A Type 3 MOT structural sub-base was laid and compacted with a plate compactor, giving the driveway a stable foundation to support vehicle loads and the resin surface above it.

3. Charcoal Block Paving Border
A charcoal block paving border was installed around the driveway, including a double border at the entrance. The blocks were cut and mitred at every corner and angle for a crisp, precise finish, then set on a firm bed with concrete edge restraints for long-term stability.

4. Rebuilding the Entrance Pillar
The old, crumbling pillar was rebuilt in new red brick and topped with a coping stone, giving the entrance a smart, solid finish that sits neatly alongside the block paving border.

5. Resin Base Coat System
Above the Type 3 MOT, a 40mm thick resin base coat system from Derbyshire Aggregates was installed, with reinforcing mesh laid underneath and on top. This construction creates a highly permeable, strong sub-base for the resin bound surface, which is essential for a long-lasting finish that resists cracking and movement.
6. Preparing the Steps
The steps were carefully measured up and prepared. Timber frames and edge trims were fixed in place to create clean, sharp lines ready for the resin.

7. Resin Bound Steps and Border
A grey resin bound border was trowelled around each step, creating a contrast edge. The treads were then in filled with Harvest Gold resin to tie in with the driveway.

8. 20mm Resin Bound Driveway and Side Pathway
The Harvest Gold resin bound surface was hand-trowelled across the full driveway and along the side pathway to the front door. It was laid at a 20mm depth, which is above the standard depth typically used for resin bound surfaces. The extra thickness gives a stronger, more durable finish that is better able to withstand daily vehicle use, and the result is a smooth, seamless, permeable surface.
The Result
The finished project is a complete transformation. The warm Harvest Gold resin surface, framed by charcoal block paving, complements the pebble-dash of the house, while the grey-bordered steps add a smart, practical detail at the front door. The new capped pillar gives the entrance a clean, solid look. The side pathway offers safe, level access to the front door, and the permeable surface means excellent drainage with no standing water. The homeowner now has a high-quality, long-lasting driveway in Bridgend that has lifted the kerb appeal of the whole property.

Why Resin Bound Was the Right Choice
- Extra durability – laid at 20mm, above standard depth, on a compacted Type 3 MOT sub-base and a 40mm reinforced resin base coat for a long-lasting, hard-wearing finish
- Permeability – SUDS-compliant, with a highly permeable build-up that allows water to drain through rather than pool on the surface, which is ideal for South Wales weather
- Low maintenance – no loose stones, no weeds pushing through, and no cracking
- Versatility – one seamless material used across the driveway, pathway and steps for a cohesive finish
- Kerb appeal – a smooth natural stone look that instantly lifts the front of the property
